The Power of Focusing on One Thing at a Time

I have a 6-year-old daughter who is brimming with energy and excitement—and tries to do all the things all at once.

Earlier this week, she was attempting to eat a snack, watch TV, draw a picture, and ask me a dozen questions all at the same time. She was making her artwork a food-covered mess, she wasn't tracking our conversation well, and I'm sure she wasn't retaining what was on  the TV.

I put a napkin into her hands and said: “Do one thing at a time.”

It’s something I tell her all the time. And I realized it’s advice that’s just as important for us adults—especially as business owners.

Why trying to do it all doesn’t work

As tempting as it is to multi-task, research shows that splitting our attention means we do everything less effectively.

  • Tasks take longer.

  • Mistakes increase.

  • Stress levels climb.

When you’re running a business, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wearing all the hats. You’re the marketing director, customer service rep, operations manager—and yes, sometimes the bookkeeper, too.

But just like my daughter trying to snack, sketch, and watch TV all at once, it means none of these areas get the quality or focus they deserve.

Focus on what you do best

Imagine what would happen if you gave your undivided attention to your clients, patients, or customers. If you focused your energy on growing your services, building relationships, or expanding your reach—rather than getting bogged down in bookkeeping and payroll.

Outsourcing your bookkeeping is one of the simplest ways to buy back your focus. It frees you to do the work only you can do, while still ensuring your financial foundation is solid, organized, and ready when you need it.

Do one thing at a time

Whether you’re six years old or sixty-six, the principle holds:
When you give one thing your full attention, you do it better—and you enjoy it more.
